Hospice is a specialized type of care for those facing life-limiting illnesses and who are no longer pursuing or benefiting from aggressive or experimental treatments. At this juncture, the primary focus is shifted to quality of life.

Hospice is not a place, but rather a service customized for each person whether in a person’s home, assisted living residence, nursing facility or hospital. The services and where they are provided are completely the choice of the patient and the family. Hospice teams with the patient, caregivers, medical staff, pastoral and other care to develop a plan of care to affirm life, provide guidance, and provide support.

Services may include:

  • medications related to the hospice diagnosis
  • medical equipment and supplies
  • personal care, such as bathing, feeding and dressing
  • nursing care
  • counseling
  • spiritual support
