What is a Boomerang Club??

Bethany Hospice has a Boomerang Club.  What is that, you ask?  Bethany is an awesome place to work.  Some folks do leave our employment at times for a variety of reasons.  Over the years, we have had quite a few of the staff that leave decide to come back to us.  Kind of like a boomerang!  So we started a Boomerang Club.  Welcome back to the newest member of the Boomerang Club, Danielle Forkey, seen here with her supervisor, Susan Whittaker (also a Boomerang Club member!)

Anyone who has met our Medical Director, Mylynda Massart, knows what a caring, kind soul she is.  She goes above and beyond for our patients everyday.  She even makes house calls.  She recently was on one such call with our Social Worker, Sinika Calloway, when they encountered a fire emergency in the patient home.  Emergency responders paid a visit.  The patient was placed in a safe location without harm.  And Sinika and Dr. Massart made some new friends!

National Hospice Month Observance

Most Americans say what they want at the end of life is to die in their own homes, as comfortable and free of pain as possible. The hospice philosophy is about making sure that a patient’s experience reflects their wishes. In observance of National Hospice Month, Bethany Hospice would like to share four ways that we help to deliver this:
Hospice gives you comfort. Bethany Hospice staff are experts at managing life-limiting illnesses. The hospice team ensures that medication and treatments all support a care plan that is centered on the patient’s and family’s goals. Hospice services are offered wherever the patient calls home – including private homes, personal care homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals.
Hospice gives you peace. Beyond physical relief, Bethany Hospice strives to help patients and families find emotional and spiritual comfort during what can be a very distressing time. Bethany Hospice provides patients and families with counselors, spiritual care advisors and bereavement professionals who can best support their struggles with death and grieving.
These services are part of the hospice benefit, covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances.
Hospice gives caregivers guidance. Many families are not prepared to face the death of a loved one. In addition to caring for patients, Bethany Hospice also offers services for families and loved ones that provide emotional support, practical advice and skills teaching to help family members become confident caregivers. Bereavement services also help families and loved ones adjust to the future through the provision of ongoing grief support.
Hospice gives you more. Be it more joy, more love, or more quality of life in general, the goal of Bethany Hospice is to offer patients the ability to enjoy the time they have remaining, and create meaningful memories for their families. Hospice offers more moments of life.

If you or a loved one are facing a serious illness and would like to learn more about health care options, please call Bethany Hospice at 412-921-2209 or visit the interactive tool.

Bella is a smart, active 9-year-old ready to start 4th grade at Mary Queen of Apostles School. At 10 months, Bella was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. The treatment she received, including a stem cell transplant, chemotherapy, and many blood transfusions, allowed her to live cancer-free for 8 years. In May 2014, a routine test revealed that the Ewing's Sarcoma had returned. Bella had her tumor resected at the end of May and began chemotherapy in mid-June. She will continue treatment over the next year at Children's Hospital. Bella will need blood and platelets regularly throughout her treatment. To help, please schedule an appointment with the Central Blood Bank (412-209-7000) and reference Bella's replenishment account number - ZRTN0069.

National Hospice Month Observance
November is National Hospice Month, a time for Bethany Hospice to reach out to our community to raise awareness about options for living with a serious illness. No one likes to think about death and dying, but it’s something we all face eventually. One of the most important messages to help people understand is that hospice care helps patients and families focus on living. The Bethany Hospice team provides expert medical care to keep patients comfortable and able to enjoy time with loved ones. We answer questions, offer advice on what to expect, and help you with the duties of being a caregiver. Bethany Hospice also provides emotional and spiritual support for the entire family. Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and by most insurance plans. Hospice care is provided in the home, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospitals. Bethany Hospice's experts and trained volunteers will ask you what’s important and listen to what you say.  We make your wishes a priority. If you or a loved one is facing a serious or life-limiting illness, the time to find out more about hospice and palliative care is right now. Please call us at 412-921-2209 for more information. Calls answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Bethany Hospice Sponsors 81 Veterans for Charity Outing on the Gateway Clipper
Bethany Hospice announced today that it will sponsor 81 hospitalized veterans for the 2013 Sharing and Caring Inc. Labor Day riverboat cruise aboard the Gateway Clipper. Since 2008, Bethany Hospice has raised funds through the generous donations of employees and volunteers to sponsor over 180 veterans. “It is so rewarding to give back to people who have given so much to our country. While we are involved in many community service projects, Sharing and Caring is near and dear to our hearts,” said Diane Mead, President & CEO, Bethany Hospice. “Sharing and Caring operates solely on the funds raised by our donors. Veterans gave us the liberty that we are able to enjoy today; and we figure that the least we can do is help them enjoy a little bit of life,” said Robert Abbott, President, Sharing and Caring Inc.

Sharing and Caring Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring hospitalized veterans by providing therapeutic recreation activities. The organization is composed of a volunteer staff that represents 17 veterans service organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and American Legion. Sharing and Caring sponsors events and funds activities at veterans hospitals around the Greater Pittsburgh region.

Suppoting our Veterans through Caring And Sharing

Bethany Hospice is proud to have supported a Memorial Day Fundraising effort to benefit America's true patriots, our hospitalized veterans. This is our 5th year supporting the cause, and we are proud to announce that, with the support of Diane Mead, Executive Director, and Sam Angelo, Vice President, we were able to again raise $2000 this year to sponsor 80 veterans for a day of fun in September.

Sharing And Caring Inc. is a non-profit corporation that, along with community sponsorship, entertains roughly 900 medically approved veterans with a fun filled cruise on the Gateway Clipper Majestic.  The day begins with refreshments and entertainment on the dock and then it's "All Aboard" for a Three Rivers Cruise, hot buffet lunch, dancing, prizes, clowns, and a memorial service.  Just $25.00 sponsors a veteran for the entire day.
